What are the rules for Coed Softball?
Coed Rule Highlights
- Teams must use an alternate batting order, i.e.: male-female or female-male. Teams may bat female, female, but NOT male, male.
- Catcher/Pitcher: if the pitcher is male, the catcher must be female or male catcher and female pitcher. Other fielders: infield 2 female, 2 male: outfield 2 female, 2 male. Teams with 9 players (5 female; 4 male) can have a female at both pitcher and catcher position. Teams playing shorthanded with 3 outfielders or infielders may have 2 males either outfield or infield but not both.
- Teams may NOT play more men than women. Teams may play more women than men. If a team has more men than women, the substitution rule will be in effect.
- If a male batter walks, he automatically advances to 2nd base. The female batter will bat. With two outs, the female batter has the option to walk or bat.
- Designated infielders must stay on infield dirt until the ball has been hit. They may not start the play on the grass.
- All players may bat, provided there aren’t more men than women. A team can only play ten players in the field on defense at one time. If more than ten players show up for the game, those players may be added to the batting lineup card, provided players alternate male, female, etc., and don’t bat more men than women. When batting more than 10, players can be substituted defensively.
How many players can I have on my roster?
A roster can have an unlimited number of players. However, each player must sign the roster to be eligible. Prior to the start of the season, each team manager/coach will receive a blank roster in the coach’s packet and/or via email. Completed rosters must be turned into the scorekeeper at the game site prior to the second game of the season. Completed rosters must include printed name, address, and signature for all players. Additional players may be added to the roster after it has been submitted, but all new players must sign the roster before playing.
When can I expect to get my game schedule?
Game schedules are available at the coach’s meeting. Schedules will also be emailed to the team manager/coach. Additionally, schedules are posted on this website!
What is the rule of jerseys?
Each player must have a jersey with a number on the back visible for the scorekeeper and the umpire to see (8″ number is ideal). A player without a LEGAL uniform cannot play. Numbers can be stenciled on, markered on, or silk screened on. If markered, the numbers must be 8″ high and 1″wide. NO duplicate numbers will be allowed. Two players may not share the same jersey (IE, substitutes, trading, cannot take jersey off and give to another player for their at bat).
What equipment is provided?
Orem Recreation provides the games balls for the games. Players and coaches are in charge of providing gloves, bats, and balls (to warm up with) and any other equipment required (helmets, face masks, etc.).
What bats are allowed?
Orem Recreation sanctions all adult softball leagues with USA Softball. Any bat used in Orem Recreation leagues must have an ASA stamp, or if it’s a newer bat it will have the USA Softball Logo.
